Local nursing students receive Boyd Scholarship

On May 3, five nursing students received the Clifton E. Boyd Scholarship from the Pitt Golden K Kiwanis. Every year, this award is given to deserving nursing students working through their curriculum within Pitt County at either East Carolina or Pitt Community College.

These young ladies received this award based on their academic merit, financial need or other factors recommended by the scholarship committee. This year the scholarship was awarded to four students from ECU and one from PCC. Each student received $750 to use towards tuition, fees, books and equipment.

This year’s recipients were: Jessica Green (ECU), Emmalyn Hicks (ECU), Eboni Wiley (ECU) and Allie Kmiecik (ECU). Not pictured is Allison Lennon (PCC).

The Pitt Golden K Kiwanis created this scholarship in 2002 in honor of their member Clifton E. Boyd who died in 2006. Boyd was a vital member of the community, even serving as President of the Kiwanis club. Boyd also played an important roll in creating several scholarships for both ECU and PCC. In 2000, he received the North Carolina Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service.
